Thriller Treatment (Dan)

The thriller will start with a over the shoulder shot of someone looking over old film photos on a table. The room has very low lighting and is only a single light source such as a desk lamp. The camera moves round from the shoulder to a side few of the person sitting in the chair with his shadow in the background. We then see a close up of the person ripping up a bunch of the photos.

From here we then cut to a girl walking down the street this starts off with the camera being behind her but this camera then goes past her and shows the front of her. In the background we see a man looking “dodgy” taking photos of this women wearing a dark overcoat/jacket. As the women gets closer this person disappears into the alleyway, the women then follows goes down the same allay as the person went down. We see a small shot of the women going into the ally. From this we see he alleyway to be quite dark, the camera stops here and freezes. Seconds later we hear a scream come from the alleyway.This quickly then cuts first to a over the shoulder of a person watching the news and then a full frame of the news. In this we see a story about a girl that has gone missing, they show a photo on the tv and explain she is missing, this photo matches the girl we had earlier seen walking down the street as soon as this story finishes we go to a over the shoulder again and the tv is immediately switched off. We then have a flash effect and go straight into titles.

These shots will be at different angles such as low and high angled shots. In this I would also like to include a great deal of movement this can be achieved using a dolly or even if possible a jib. This would make the film a lot more life like and make it seem more realistic.The music would be a ghostly pad to add suspense to the film. To do this I would create a ordinary pad synth and then add large amounts of reverb and delay.In my film I will use many different Diagetic sounds including ripping noises, foot steps and also screams. I using a shotgun microphone on a pistol grip or downloaded royalty free could record this. I would also be using some non-diagetic sound for the titles, this would be a “Bass shot” this can be done using sequencing software easily and would add a lot of suspense to the film. This would also sound even more realistic if played on a system that uses a subwoofer.

Taken opening sequence

In my presentation I talked about the opening sequence of Taken because of the use of sounds and lighting.

At the start of the opening sequence there is an old camera which gives the effect of someones watching a home video.

It then cuts to a man a sleep on a sofa and he is just waking up so we the audience thinks that the man was dreaming about the old video we have just seen. It then cuts to a close up of an instruction manual of a karaoke machine.

Then we see a shot of the title of the film and a photo of a girl on a horse which makes up believe that she is his daughter. Then the shot changes to street and the title of the film stays there.

A man then goes into a shop and takes a look at a karaoke machine so then we know why he had an instruction manual for one. The man then buys the machine and it then the shot cuts to the man wrapping it up in birthday wrapping paper and then the film starts.

Story Board For Continuity Exercise

This is the story board for continuity exercise, we each did a page each using the draft plan we wrote down on lined paper.

As you can see we are using a range of different shots such as; long shots, mid shots, close ups and establishing shots.

We also used camera movement by including a pan shot and zoom shot in our plan.

Thriller Opening - Twilight

Twilight - Opening Sequence

Twilight opening sequence:

The opening sequence has slow moving shots at first.

It starts of with the girl talking about how she wanted to die. This is a voice over to the video clip, which could suggest that she is dreaming of an event that happened to her.

After she stops speaking the camera shots move a fast pace, with a lot of action going on.

There is non-diegetic sounds playing as we concentrate on this animal. There are soft violin noises to start of with – which could imply death, but suddenly changes to heavy drum sounds beating to give the impression of that something is chasing it.

For a split second we see the man grab the deer, then the shot goes to the girl.

This could tell us the animal has been killed, and the girl had a flashback of a event in her past.

The colour of the opening shot and the rest of the film has a blue/green tit to it. Which implies to the audience a cold feeling.

The shot of the car reverseing of the drive, we notice that is a left hand drive car, so it is not based in the uk and as the camera is inside the car it makes you look out the window as it is more brighter compared to the girls face, and when it cuts to the aeroplane we know that this base is somewhere in deserted quite area??? Except when we see the airport, but it still isn’t very busy

Thriller openings presentation (Dan)

Hello again,
Today in class the first people presented there thriller opening, amoung these 2 people from our group presented there's. These were Alex and Dan

In this blog post me (Dan) will be showing what i presented to the class as well as my reasons on why the film i picked is a thriller.

The film i picked to present was the day after tomorrow, while not counted as a traditional thriller it is still classed under the thriller genre. The movie is about global warming and gives a insight it to what may happen to our planet if this happens in real life. The film was disrobuted by 20th century fox as was released may 2004.

The film starts of with the 20th century fox logo but for this film it has been changed to include thunder and lightening above it. This put the viewer on edge as it makes them think that straight away it the film has some element of death or a horrible event.

This then fades into a black screen with white text, this for the viewer adds suspense about what is about to come when the black fades away into the movie. The typography on this text is also very blad and is verry straight, this adds a more serious tone to the movie and shows it will not be something like a animation.

The music in the background is a very relaxed panning pad sort of synth. This adds a sense of suspense to the video and again makes the video have a more serious tone to it.

After this we then cut to a scene of going over the ice with black text, this shows a sense of purity and that the it is good. The place that the camera pans over looks very open and looks like there in no life around. This makes the audience think and look about to see if there is anything about and makes the audience on edge incase something comes up by surprise.

After this we see some men in jackets drilling into the ice, because they are the only people around we think that they could be spy's. We also see them with lots of equiptment because of this again this makes us think even more that they are spying on someone or something.

We then see the people who are working have US government on them this makes us think even more that they are spy's and that they are looking for something. We see the man come inside the cabin with samples of some kind this makes the view thing that the samples are valuable, to back this up we also hear the man say about how he doesn't trust the new guy on the drill. This shows that it is important as they don't trust the new guy in doing the job.

We then cut to a shot showing the new man drilling and the ice cracking, this is showing the view that whatever they are doing they are going very deep in, so deep that it causes the ice to crack. We cut to a close up then of the mans face looking anxious and then to the crack of the ice this is showing the view that something has gone wrong.

Hello, this is our first post for the blog. In our group is Dan Haycocks, Alex Pickering & Darryl Taylor.

We are currently planning our continuity video, which should be uploaded to here once its complete.

We'll continue updating out blog through out the year.
